The FIFA Confederations Cup kicks off in Brazil on Saturday, as organisers and the teams involved get geared up for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The hosts, Brazil, will be aiming to retain their trophy for the third consecutive time following final victories against United States (2009) and Argentina (2005). However, form has dipped in recent years, blamed in some quarters by a lack of competitive fixtures due to their automatic spot in the World Cup. This was typified last week when they found themselves 22nd in the FIFA rankings, their lowest spot ever. They may draw confidence from their 3-0 warm-up victory over France, though, as they begin the tournament against Japan on Saturday.

The 2022/23 season is over as far as the Premier League is concerned, and despite it frequently being described as the most competitive in the world, it comes as a surprise to nobody anymore that the crown still belongs to Manchester City. The only game in St Petersburg in our third full week out here was Sweden s forgettable 1-0 win over Switzerland.

One of the region s temporary residents of course saw off the Scandinavians this weekend, but England s game against Colombia provided a truly memorable moment for the Omnisport contingent as we took in the penalty shoot-out drama alongside some vocal and gracious South Americans.

There was time for an appallingly inaccurate prediction, dodgeball in Repino and American football on Krestovsky Island.

Germany captain Michael Ballack, who will celebrate his 33rd birthday in three weeks, said Thursday he will decide if he will continue playing after the World Cup in June next year.

I will decide after the 2010 World Cup if I will continue playing or if I will stop, the Chelsea star told the Express newspaper while preparing for Saturday s friendly against South Africa in Leverkusen.

I will continue as long as I enjoy it and still have ambitions in the sport.

Ballack, who played in the 2002 World Cup final and the semi-final of the 2006 tournament, has scored 41 goals in 93 appearances for Germany.
